Social Media Policy

Updated November 2026

This policy explains how I use social media and other online spaces as a psychotherapist, and what you can expect if we are, or have been, working together. Its purpose is to protect your privacy and support clear professional boundaries.

My professional social media presence

Time, Space, Talk has a public business presence on Facebook and Instagram. You are welcome to follow these pages if you wish. Following a public page does not create a therapeutic or private connection between us.

Please be aware that liking, commenting on, sharing or otherwise interacting with a public business page may be visible to other people, depending on the platform's settings. This could reveal or allow others to infer that you have a connection with my practice. I do not reply to individual comments on posts, as doing so could draw attention to your relationship with the practice.

What I post publicly follows the BACP Ethical Framework. I will never post anything that could identify a client or describe client work.

Friend requests and connections

I do not accept friend, follow or contact requests from current or former clients on my personal social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or other networking platforms. I keep my personal and professional online presence separate. This helps protect your confidentiality, my privacy and the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship.

If you send a request, I will not accept it. This is not a personal rejection; it is a boundary I apply consistently to protect the therapeutic work.

Your online presence

I do not routinely search for clients online or look at their social media profiles. Searching for information about you without your knowledge could affect trust and the balance of our relationship. If you would like to share something from your online life because it feels relevant to our work, please bring it into a session and we can decide together how best to explore it.

There may be exceptional circumstances where an online search is considered necessary to address a serious and immediate concern about safety. If this ever arises, I will consider the necessity and proportionality of doing so, discuss it in supervision where appropriate, and be as open with you as the circumstances allow.

Contacting me through social media

Please do not use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or other social media messaging to contact me about appointments or therapy. These platforms are not channels I use for confidential communication, and I do not monitor them as a way of receiving client messages. I will not respond to clinical or administrative messages sent through these platforms.

Email is my preferred way to contact me between sessions, particularly for arranging or changing appointments. My professional email address is timespacetalk@proton.me. If you have agreed to this, you can also text me or message me on WhatsApp (WhatsApp Business) on my professional number, 07877 757145, for brief practical arrangements. Besides telephone calls, email, text and WhatsApp are the only ways I communicate with clients; please do not contact me through any other app or platform.

Please avoid sending detailed information about your counselling or personal circumstances by email, text or WhatsApp. These are best kept for practical arrangements. I will respond to messages within my usual working hours and as soon as reasonably practicable; email, text, WhatsApp and social media are not urgent or crisis-support services. If you need urgent help, use the appropriate emergency or crisis service rather than relying on a message to me.

I do not leave voicemails for clients, but my phone can receive them. Emails, texts and WhatsApp messages between us are kept as part of your record, as explained in my Privacy Notice.

Email, text and WhatsApp privacy

I use Proton Mail, an encrypted email service, for my professional email. Encryption can improve the protection of email content, but it does not remove every privacy risk. For example, the security of your own email account and device, message notifications, recipients' devices and the information contained in message headers may also matter. You do not need to create a Proton Mail account to contact me.

WhatsApp messages are encrypted, but WhatsApp collects some information about how it is used, and ordinary text messages are not encrypted. Notifications on your phone may also be seen by other people, so you may wish to turn them off or hide message previews.

If you would prefer not to use email, text or WhatsApp, please raise this with me and we can discuss a practical alternative for appointment arrangements.

Reviews, testimonials and business listings

You may come across my practice on business directories, review websites or other platforms. A listing for Time, Space, Talk is not a request for a testimonial, rating or endorsement from you, whether you are a current or former client.

You are free to express your views or leave a review if you choose. However, to protect confidentiality, I do not respond publicly to reviews or comments that may identify someone as a client. This applies even if the person posting has identified themselves. I may not see reviews or comments, and they are not a reliable way to communicate something you want me to know about our work.

If you have feedback, concerns or a complaint about our work, I encourage you to raise it with me directly where you feel able. We can discuss it within the therapeutic relationship or use the complaints process set out in my working agreement.

Tags, photographs and accidental online contact

Please consider carefully before tagging the practice, posting photographs taken at my workplace, or identifying me publicly in a way that could reveal your connection with the practice. I will not identify you as a client or confirm a therapeutic relationship online.

If we encounter each other online or in a public digital space, I will maintain the same professional boundaries and will not acknowledge our therapeutic relationship unless you raise it in a context where a response is appropriate and safe. If you are unsure how I will respond, we can talk about this in a session.

Location-based services

I do not list my practice as a check-in location on services such as Foursquare. If you use location-sharing or check-in features on your phone or social media accounts, be aware that repeated visits to a location may allow other people to infer that you attend therapy there. You may wish to review your device and app location settings.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy if my practice or the platforms I use change. The current version will be available through my website. If a change has a significant effect on how we manage online contact or professional boundaries, I will draw it to your attention.

This policy forms part of the information I provide about working together. If anything in it is unclear or you would like to discuss how it applies to a particular situation, please feel free to raise it with me.
